California Day 3: Giant Sequoia National Park

Giant Sequoia National Park today!  It was absolutely wild!

These trees are enormous.  And by enormous I mean other worldly huge.  We wandered around the park and enjoyed the beautiful sights and smells of a forest waking up from winter.

The problem with these trees is you have a very difficult time getting them inside a picture!

And when you do, their scale seems way off.

They are breathtakingly majestic.

We traipsed through more snow today, with my hip and newly sore calves protesting much of the way!

We are actually in most of the pictures, it's just almost impossible to see us so tiny!  We are the only thing that provides any scale for these trees!

The way the panoramic pictures work makes the curvature of the trees completely comical.

One of the most fascinating phenomenon was the burnt out sequoias.  There are regular forest fires, as in most forests, and these trees are HARDY.  Even with severe fire damage, they can go on living and growing scar tissue around the burns.  This one didn't make it, but still shoots up into the air higher than you can imagine.  See me down at its base?

Jon is absolutely enamored by these trees.  He was thrilled to find little ones and searched all over for pine cones with their seeds.

It was a gorgeous spring day, with snow melt making trickling noises throughout the forest.

I'm in this one, too!  Almost invisible.

Getting a bit bigger...Jon wants these in his yard!

Another couple burned out trunks with some living branches still growing at the tops.

Do you spot us!?

A little more visible inside a burn scar.

These look so misshapen due to the picture process.

Jon is my favorite...just gazing up at this giant of a tree.

Leaving the park, we spotted these gorgeous purple flowering trees and had to take a picture.

The drive back to the hotel was amazing.  We drove out the south end of Sequoia, and that took us right by numerous orange groves blooming.  I have never smelled orange blossoms before, and I was astounded at the sweet smell.  It was an incredible experience to drive down the highway with the windows down, in orange blossom scented air, enjoying the dimming evening with Jon.
