Ireland Day 2

Morning has come, and with it very little sleep, as you can tell by our faces.  It was only 6 hours, but it was a long 6 hours.  It's actually pretty hard to fly overseas from the east coast because the flight times are shorter.  With both dinner and breakfast, you get about 4 hours max of lights out and there are still noises and dings and people bustling about.

BUT...our first views of Ireland out the plane window!

Look at these beautiful patchwork farms right by the airport.  We were so excited to begin this voyage!

At the airport we encountered our first snafu...part of the package we purchased from Costco included a private driver from the airport to our hotel.  We were told that driver would be waiting for us in arrivals holding a sign with our name on it.  Well, there wasn't.  We waited around for a time, searched everywhere possible, waited some more, tried to call the Costco number and got someone in Spain who had no idea what we were talking about, so it was a bit frustrating.  It was eventually clear that no one was coming for us, so we finally headed out to get a taxi!

Our taxi drove us into Dublin proper, and dropped us off right at our Hotel entrance.  We couldn't check in just yet, so we sat for a bit trying to gather our jetlagged thoughts before heading out into the city to explore.  Our first stop was Trinity College, where the Book of Kells is housed.  It's a super famous set of Latin manuscripts containing the four Gospels of the New Testament.

You walk in and up the stairs, and there's this crazy library of floor to ceiling really old books.

Each little alcove had a giant ladder that slid along the rails so the top books could be accessed.  It's hard to tell, but the books on the bottom shelves were some of them 18 inches tall.

We followed the crowds into the room where the Book of Kells was on display.  It is incredible as an artifact well preserved, but very small, and honestly a bit hard to see with all the people.

Really, it was so perfect to be wandering around Dublin, Ireland...it was overcast today, and there are castles and giant churches everywhere, and lots of pubs!  Our next stop was St. Patrick's Cathedral, famous for many reasons, one being the seat of Jonathan Swift's burial and where he served in the office of Dean.

It was a beautiful cathedral, kind of strange to imagine going to church there on Sundays.  It's enormous, and drafty, but with beautiful architecture and stained glass.

What was perhaps the strangest thing we encountered is the tombs literally IN the church.  People buried right under the floor, and memorialized with plaques and engraven stone on the floor, where everybody walks.  People buried in the walls...our understanding is that you could be buried right inside the church if you had enough money, standing, or influence.  Jonathan Swift's bust marks his tomb there in the church.  Others had portraits, and poems, and scripture.  It just seemed a strange place for burials, but I suppose if being buried on sacred ground is important, then there's not anywhere more sacred than INSIDE the church itself!  The small graveyard outside the church must have been the less influential bunch.

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around Dublin, trying to postpone going to the hotel to CRASH.  We mostly headed the way back to the hotel, and ended up stopping at a fish and chips place, which was delicious.  Food is getting a bit trickier for me...things sound good and then they just don't or they don't sit well afterwards, but this really hit the spot.  We walked along the River Liffey and stopped at a little donut shop for a treat.  Then it was just time to be done.  I'm astounded we made it all day without falling over!  There were certainly a few times I wanted to!  Tomorrow it's off to Northern Ireland after we get our rental car!

Ireland Day 1

We left for Ireland this afternoon!  We had a harried morning trying to get everything packed last minute, and then thought of a couple things we needed so we ran out to grab them.  One of them being a selfie stick, which was amusing to no end!  Right before my dad came to pick us up, we filmed the week's How Big is Our Baby reveal so we could send it to the girls on Monday through Skype.

We made it to the airport with no trouble, got checked in with our bags, and found our seats!  We were so excited, but I am a little apprehensive about the night ahead...sleeping for real in an airplane is pretty difficult.  I'm hoping with the combination of being super tired all the time with baby, and all my regular nighttime vitamins and a Benadryl, I should be able to zonk.  We shall see!

Our first leg was the flight to New York, which took us right over Detroit.  Jon took a picture of the flight tracker right as we passed over and we waved out the window to Grandma and Grandpa G!  We tried to get the airplane wi-fi working so we could text them to LOOK UP, but it didn't work out.

The next leg is New York to Dublin, which actually isn't that long a flight.  It's only about 6 hours, so my fingers are crossed.

Today was a super warm so we were outside playing!  The girls thought it was pretty funny when I hopped on to one of the plasma cars and started wheeling around.  I guess Jon thought it was funny, too, because he took these pictures!

This evening we spent at the park with the girls so we could get some quality time in before we leave for Ireland.  I'm not always feeling so well, especially in the evenings, so I was a bystander as they went on the swings!

They had a great time jumping out of the swings, just as I remember doing as a kid myself.

Here are the slow motion videos!

In preparation for our Ireland trip, we discussed the concerns with wearing our nice expensive rings around as tourists, so we ordered inexpensive rings on Amazon for the trip.  Mine came today, an infinity band in (faux!) rose gold.  It will do nicely to keep my real ring safe at home.  Jon was able to find a faux rose gold band to wear, too, that's very similar to his real ring, save without the knife edge.  We are very pleased with our cheapo rings!!

I actually can't remember when we took this card to Jordan and Alicia, but this was their announcement!

Today is our family Easter celebration!  Grandmere and Bapa and Uncles Mark and John came for Easter dinner and an indoor egg hunt!

I went and got a bunch of pretty spring colored flowers and filled all sorts of vases and containers with them for our table, and used boxwood and ceramic eggs for the individual place settings.

It was very bright and cheerful.

I was thrilled to be able to find some pink ranunculus, which I LOVE.

The eggs for the girls were hidden in the living room, and then chaos ensued as they went searching for them in such a small space.  We did a pretty good job hiding them, too!  There were several that they couldn't find and had to be coached.

Grandmere always puts awesome things in her eggs, and ours are usually just little treats and some quarters.  I think the girls got several dollars each, as well as nail art kits!

Easter dinner was delicious, with peas and scalloped potatoes and ham.  It was really nice to be able to celebrate with everyone before Jon and I leave this week.

Easter is coming up very quickly, and Jon and I will be out of town for the actual day, so we decided we are going to celebrate Easter early tomorrow!

We got out the baskets and some decorations from the dollar store, and they set to making their baskets lovely for the Easter Bunny to fill.  I like this tradition from Jon's family.

Jon and I didn't decorate baskets, but we hung out with the girls.

Here they are, all ready for the Easter Bunny to fill up!  They wrote little notes to the Easter bunny, too.

Leiden's drama class had their performances tonight.  She was an old lady using a walker in one set.  She borrowed the walker from Grandma, who had it from a past surgery.  It was hilarious to watch her hobble onto stage.

Honestly many parts of the performance were not super well understood, but then I honestly feel that way about most modern drama!

We are proud of Leiden for branching out and trying new things!

Before I get to today, the Sunday dinner announcement went so well!  We came in and placed the cards and pots of candy at each place setting, and waited to see if anyone would figure it out.  Really only Pete, Susan, Mike, and Joan were left to tell.  It took them a long time!  My mom finally had to tell Joan to move the pot of gold.  She got super excited, then called Uncle Mike over to see it.  He read it and literally YELLED, "HOLY CRAP!!"  It was most gratifying!  They are all very happy with our news and it's really fun to share it with others who rejoice with us.

Today Mac's hair was three braids braided into one braid, then wound in a bun.  It looked really great, and she wanted pictures taken of it.

Then much to Jon's chagrin, Mac wanted to do HIS hair.  Although you can see from his face it wasn't TOO sore a trial!

He is such a great father figure to these girls.  I am grateful for him every day.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  We didn't have the girls today and decided it would be fun to go check out the BYU Museum of Art.  I remembered this installation from going down a few years ago and was glad to see it was still there.  Very fitting rainbow for St. Patrick's day, too!!

Thursday, March 15, 2018

Um...there is much snow falling today, especially at Jon's work!  He sent this picture this morning.  Quite the winter wonderland for the Ides of March!

We are very excited to announce that we are expecting to my extended family this weekend at Sunday dinner.  We decided that even though it will be the day after St. Patrick's that we wanted to do a themed announcement.  I designed these and sized them such that the tiny little black pots you can buy and fill with candy will sit right at the end of the rainbow and cover the punch line!  I'll fill them with Rolo's to make pots of gold, and see how long it takes everyone to figure it out!  We are so excited!

At Activity Days the girls drew giant life size drawings of themselves wearing modest clothing.  Mimi posed with hers afterwards.  Check out that shirt under a dress!
