Homeward Bound

We got on the road late...sleeping in got us out much later than anticipated.  We decided to take the most direct route home, which would take us through Donner's Pass in the Sierras.

The weather was rainy and chilly.

Then as we gained altitude, it became more chilly and turned to snow.

As we continued along, we soon saw signs that we would not be allowed to go ahead without tire chains or 4 wheel drive.  Our little rental car did not have 4 wheel drive, and they were being super serious about the chains, and we didn't really want to crash the car and die, so we had to stop at a gas station that was making a KILLING on all the unsuspecting travelers.  We had to spend $60 on chains that would only fit the rental car tires and not tires on either of our cars at home.  Luckily Jon knew how to put them on so we could save the $40 installation fee.  Because the gas station was a mad house, we were set back about another hour.

We made it over the summit with no problems, and soon took off our briefly used chains.

We lost a lot of time, and we kind of just kept watching the sun set in the rear view mirror, knowing we still had HOURS to go.  We debated having Brad keep the girls an extra day so we could stop and stay somewhere, but decided to push through.  Jon drove the entire way, blasting the 80s and 90s stations on SiriusXM, and I stayed awake with him singing deliriously!  We finally blasted into SLC about 3:30 AM, crashed for a couple hours, then woke up to get the girls!

Not a happy re-entry, but our trip was fabulous and we were excited to see the girls.  Somehow we made it through the day on just a couple hours sleep, and now the real work of getting the girls back onto a schedule and feeling secure again begins!!
