The Trauma of Piercing Ears

This was a way more traumatic experience for Meemer than it was for the other two girls!  She has wanted to get her ears done for a while, and was happy enough to set out.  There was only one girl working the Claire's store tonight, and so we picked the earrings, and got her all marked, and the girl punched the first one through and Mimi totally lost it.  She started crying that it hurt, she wouldn't stay in the chair, and she absolutely REFUSED to let the girl put the earring through the other ear.  After 20 minutes of this I was at my wits' end.  We tried bribes, we tried threats, we tried just telling her she could just walk out with only one earring, and that would be fine.  She didn't want the other one done, but she didn't want to leave with only one.  Even the girl working was getting frustrated.  Of course, she was maybe 19 years old!

Jon took the other two out so I could talk with Mimi alone, and he finally had the brilliant idea to bring back ice to "numb" her earlobe with.  She FINALLY got on board with this idea, and so Jon held the ice to her ear for a couple minutes, then she squeezed her eyes shut, held my hand, and the girl shot the earring gun fast!  We did it!!

Of course, it does sting a little.  But it's SCARY more than it's painful.  Once we were done, she was all smiles, and no pain.  It's hard to get them to trust you sometimes, but we got them done!
