Michigan Day 8

This morning we missed the hotel breakfast, which the girls had really looked forward to.  They weren't super happy (mostly Mac), mostly due to being super tired, but we headed to the store for breakfast, then met up at GGG's house to go to the zoo together!  We thought that would be a fun jaunt, and we haven't made it to the zoo in SLC this summer.

Our first stop was to get coney dogs for lunch.

It is MUCH hotter in Detroit than it was by the lake, and no lake to cool off in!  And the humidity was crazy.  I had forgotten what high temps and high humidity were like!!  The only water to drink was warm, so there was no help for it but to just pretend it wasn't sweltering.  The zoo was fun to wander around, and even though it was hot afternoon we saw most of the animals out and about.
One of my favorites was of course the tiny 3 week old chimpanzee clinging to her mom, and the great big silverback gorilla pulling grass in his area.  Eerily similar to how I used to pull grass as a child!  Also...baby peacocks!  They were so little, and despite their drab coloring compared to their dad, SO CUTE.

After the zoo closed, we headed to a pasty shop so Jon could induct us into the world of Cornish pasties!  We got some to go and headed back to GGG's house to eat dinner together.  The girls really liked the pasties, and Jon was thrilled to have one after so long.
After dinner we walked to Woodward Avenue and got ice creams and saw a few cars out and about for the Dream Cruise next week.  We tried to point out the super cool cars to the girls, and they had fun spotting their own finds on the road!

Our time is winding down, and Jon and I are kind of dreading the long drive home.  It's always a little melancholy to be heading home after a fun trip.  These memories have been incredible to make with Jon AND the girls.  I think we've sold them on Michigan!!
